Should You Protect Your Car’s Paint Before Winter in Oregon?

Yes. If you're driving your car through an Oregon winter, the best time to protect the paint is before the rain settles in, not after. In Eugene the wet season runs from mid-October into early May, and December alone averages close to 9 inches of rain. A layer of protection applied in the fall means road grime, de-icer and tree sap land on that layer instead of your clear coat for the next six months.

What Oregon winters do to your paint

Our winters aren't harsh the way the Midwest's are, but they're long and wet, and that's its own problem.

Months of wet road grime

Every rainy drive throws a film of oil, brake dust and road dirt onto the lower half of the car. When the car never fully dries, that film sits on the paint for days at a time. Over a winter it dulls the finish and works its way into the clear coat.

De-icer on the passes and I-5

ODOT treats roads with magnesium chloride and salt to keep ice from bonding. If you drive to the mountains, over the pass or up I-5 during a cold snap, your car picks up chloride residue that keeps working on paint, wheels and the underside until it's washed off.

Sap, needles and moss

Parking under firs and maples means sap, needles and leaves that hold water against the paint. Left long enough, sap etches and leaves stain.

Less washing, less drying

Nobody wants to wash a car in 40-degree rain, so most cars go longer between washes in winter. That's exactly when contaminants do the most damage.

Your options before winter

Paint sealant: good for one winter

A paint sealant gives the paint a slick layer that sheds water and dirt for about 6–8 months, which covers one Oregon wet season. Our full detail packages, starting at $280, include a clay bar treatment and a 6–8 month sealant, so a fall detail gets the car clean and protected in one visit. See the Detail Menu for prices.

Ceramic coating: protection for years

A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat instead of sitting on top of it, and lasts years rather than months. Water and road film bead up and roll off, so the car stays cleaner between washes and is far easier to clean when you do wash it. Our coatings come in 2-year and 5-year options with a warranty and annual maintenance included. Every car is polished before it's coated, so the finish that gets locked in is a corrected one. If you plan to keep the car, this is the option that pays off over several winters. For costs, see our ceramic coating cost guide.

Paint protection film: for chips, not just grime

If your main worry is rock chips from sanded roads and highway driving, paint protection film on the front end is the physical barrier. Many owners pair PPF on the front with ceramic coating on the rest. We compare the two in PPF vs Ceramic Coating in Eugene.

When to book

October and November are the best months. The paint needs to be clean and dry to bond well, and because all of our work is done indoors at our 4,000 sq ft shop on Conger St, the weather outside doesn't hold up the job. Booking before the holidays also gets the car protected before the wettest stretch of December and January.

Winter care once it's protected

  • Wash every two to three weeks, and soon after any trip over the pass or through treated roads.

  • Rinse the lower panels and wheel wells, where de-icer and grime collect.

  • Use a pH-neutral car shampoo so you don't strip the sealant or coating.

  • Get sap and bird droppings off within a few days.

  • Skip automatic brush washes, which leave swirl marks in any finish.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to protect my paint once the rain has started?

No. Because we work indoors, the car is dried and prepped in a controlled space no matter what the weather is doing. Earlier is better only because the paint spends fewer weeks unprotected.

How long does a paint sealant last in Oregon?

About 6–8 months, which is roughly one wet season. A sealant applied in October will carry the car to spring.

Does ceramic coating help in the rain?

Yes. Coated paint sheds water and road film instead of holding it, so the car stays cleaner between washes and dirt rinses off with far less effort.

Do Oregon roads use salt?

ODOT uses magnesium chloride and salt to treat roads for ice, mostly in colder areas and during winter storms. Wash the car, especially the lower panels and underside, after driving on treated roads.
